Loci and Toot: Is this cutesy Khar cafe a hoot? We find out!

Loci and Toot: Is this cutesy Khar cafe a hoot? We find out!

Safe to say, the F&B industry is springing back into action after the crippling consequences of the lockdown. And a conscious thought that goes into these newest wrinkles in town is innovations, not just with the menus but also with the ambience. Foliage plants in quirky planters — check, themed decor pieces — check, sunkissed outdoor seating and cooler indoors — check, instagrammable spots like swings or witty wall writings or swings or even an aquarium in the washroom — all check. So fitting this bill of all things likeable and oh-so-adorable in Khar’s latest offering, Loci and Toot.

The quaint cafe is located in the quieter bylanes of the bustling Khar with the famed street shopping market of Linking Road just a hop, skip and jump away. As you reach the entrance of the cafe, you walk through the cafe’s soothing powder blue door.

How’s the ambience at Loci and Toot?

You’re warmly greeted by elegant and aesthetically pleasing interiors in the colour palette of blue, cream and grey which is courtesy of designer Riya Save. Fresh wooden accents and natural daylight instantly put to at ease. The hard-to-miss and must-have-a-picture-here spots are undeniably the large swings and the wooden door. A riot of colours, lush greenery and quirky decor pieces add to the ambience. A visit to the washroom won’t be futile either because you have a small aquarium to stare at, a know-your-pastas puzzle awaiting you in case you forget to take in your phone. Cool, right?

How are the drinks?

The cafe and wine bar prides itself on serving European food with Eastern Mediterranean accents with a chef-driven and ingredient-forward approach.

Their meticulously curated dry bar features refreshing tonics, non-alcoholic lager and IPA beer. We tried these — Swing and Sling, The Pink Wink, Melon Mayhem. True to the ambience, the Swing and Sling featuring pineapple and coconut with basil and bubbles was downright addictive and refreshing. They also have an artisanal coffee range in collaboration with Bombay Island like V60 pour-over and activated charcoal mint mocha and classics like Espresso, Macchiato and Americano.

How’s the food?

Coming on to the food, the menu features vegan salads, guilt-free toasts, small plates, burgers, Moroccan flatbread, signature handmade pastas, artisanal breads, desserts and vegan ice creams, courtesy of Chef Shahbaz Shaikh. We were given mildly spiced jowar puffs that were a delight to munch on. We tried the hand-cut potato fries with a barbecue rub served with paprika ketchup, cheddar and Monterey jack cheese dip and kale hummus. While the fries were crunchy and the dips worked well, we experienced an oily aftertaste.

Next, we tried avocado mufalata toast featuring smashed avocado labneh, pickled onion, olive salad and dried pepper on sourdough toast. The toast was refreshing and paired perfectly with the salad. We also ordered spaghetti with parmesan cheese, mustard sauce and white wine.

We also tried the spicy parma chicken with spicy tomato sauce, parmesan cheese, and baby rucola with a side of mashed potatoes. The dish was cohesive with creamy potatoes, and succulent chicken cooked to perfection, the sauce was peppery and the veggies retained their crunch.

Ending things on a sweeter note, we polished off our meal with the blackberry vegan cheesecake featuring a base of almonds, date and oats. Frankly speaking, while we loved the distinct natural taste of the cheesecake that’s devoid of added sugar, it may not appeal to everyone’s taste buds.

And what’s the verdict on Loci and Toot?

At the outset, this sweet little cafe feels like a great intimate escape from the crowded Bandra scene. Furthermore, if you’re vegan or a lover of all things organic then Loci and Toot is a wonderful place to eat if you’re ever in the neighbourhood. The cafe also doubles up as a fantastic co-working space.

Speaking of food, the lightness of all the food that is served here simply means that you can take a lunch break from your day off a street shopping spree and then feel free to continue onwards at your leisure, unencumbered by a stodgy lunch. Comfortable is the word that best describes this café and one can see a lot of effort into the presentation of the food, especially those with an artistic eye and appreciation for attention to detail will be pleased. Also, gregarious staff with happy faces, are always ready to help. If you enjoy a friendly chat and uplifting vibes then this is your place!
